By the way, he's so sweet and you are wonderful for giving homes to these animals. I love animal lovers! Japan doesn't have many animal lovers and it certainly does not have any animal protection agencies, like what the UK and the US has. There's one sole woman down in Osaka, a Brit, I think, who rescues dogs. She's been here years and is doing a fine job. :)
But , other than the cats, I didn't see many feral animals when I was there. I don't know if it's changed now. And the shamisen men kept the cats pretty much under control. Watch out for Yoda-he would make a fine instrument.:-)
No, there are no feral dogs. This is because they are taken to the dog pound and gassed within 3 days. Nearly half of all dogs taken to pound are taken by their owners because they are moving to a flat or somewhere where pets aren't allowed.
Oh my-that's terrible. I knew or saw quite a few people with dogs while there and they were always very expensive purebreeds. I don't think I ever saw a Mutt. Then there are the shiba-inu and the....the....other indigeneous breed-can't think of it now. Oh yeah-Akita. Very smart and VERY expensive here.Does the rescue lady there concentrate on any particular breed, or just any that need saving? God bless her-she has a tough job.
Just any that need saving. Even my neighbor, upon moving to the Philippines after retiring, took his mutt to the pound! I thought he was joking at first. He wasn't. Like the friends of mine by the beach who have 4 dogs and none of them EVER get walked. They are all on chains. This is why I took one for as a dogstay for one year. The wife bitched to her husband about missing Ichiro, but I refused to give the dog back until I left. That dog had a fantastic year of walks! :)

Lucky dog!!!
I know you can't save them all, but just making a difference in the life of one is a good thing.
